Florida Silver Female. What Male Should I Use?

Post by DanteD716 » Sun Oct 02, 2011 6:47 pm

I know this is kind of breeding, but it also belongs in genetics I think. Pkay, I have a female Florida Silver, what colors do you think I can get from her if I breed her with a normal male? And what about a male black cheek with her? Any other suggestions? I want to try getting Florida Silver offspring, or a different mutation. Pictures of her can be seen in my other topic in genetics. Thanks,

If you bred her to a normal grey male, you could get normal greys or sfFF. If the male happens to be split for FF as well, you could get FF from them. It is possible to have a bird that looks normal grey but is actually a single factor FF, so you might not even be able to tell. (I have a pair of "normals" that gave me my two silver hens, though they are only barely noticeably lighter than a normal).
I wouldn't recommend breeding her to black cheek, as the FF mutation works to remove black coloration, so you would likely not see black cheeks on the young. I am not sure if you would see any spectrum of color in offspring single factors that also got the BC gene.

I asked this questioned a while back regarding my two hens and most of the responses suggested pairing them with a Florida Fancy or Florida Silver.

This is what a Florida silver looks like, this is mine. He has a Isabel with him and he produces FF, silvers, Fawn Isabel, FS.

This article by Roy Becham talks about mating the silvers with other mutations

This is in regards to Florida Fancy

He's a good looking bird! Do you think if I crossed my FS hen with a gray cock I can get a FS cock?

While you were posting I added a few links in my previous post...Roy Beckham has some very helpful articles in regards to the silvers and Florida Fancy.

I have a Florida fancy male that give me silvers and FF, and Isabel. He is matched with a Fawn Isabel.

The FS and FF are such beautiful birds I hope you get good results!

If you do get a Florida Fancy male, put him with a normal no pied female you will get more silver, Isabel and FF males...then you can pair up young from both pairs.

You can get FF males from a FF/normal pair? I'll do that then. I just have to see localy if I can get a FF cock, I'll see what my uncle has in stock or his friends, he breeds birds and occasionally has some zebra finch mutations.

How much do FF cocks run for? I've never had one but I'd like to. I've only had pieds, normals, and now my silver. SO I am a begginer. There is a bird show this coming weekend so if I go I'll see if there are any FF cocks on the auction.

That's really cheap, I thought they'd be more. How often do you have FF cocks in stock? And how do you go about shipping?

I can't ship out of Florida via USPS but if you do not have luck in finding any I could in the future send you eggs overnight, you would just need birds that will sit and foster them.
