My canary converted himself to pellets

Post by StevePax » Fri Dec 02, 2011 11:16 pm

A few weeks ago, I just put a cup of pellets in the canary's cage, but I didn't do anything to try to make him eat them - I didn't mix them with his seeds or anything, just put them in. He didn't touch them for a while. But about a week ago, he decided not to eat seeds anymore, just pellets. So now his seed hopper has pellets. If that's all he will eat, then I guess I'll let him have it.

My wife's canary will go between the LaFeber's canary pellet and seeds. I was trying to convert him for several months. Then I just left the pellets in the corner, and one day I saw him eating the pellets. :D

He still gets his seeds, but he eats and seems to like both LaFebers canary pellets and Orlux Red egg food.

And he loves cantalope.

Very strange. My 3 zebra couples are in separate cages and have been fed pellets + seed mix for almost 3 months now, and none of them seem to touch the pellets.

What type of pellets did you try on your zebras? Mine love the Zupreem Fruit Blends.....and I have many, many zebras and they all eat them.

For new finches, I used the method described in this link to convert them to eating pellets.

You have to be VERY careful not to let them starve during the conversion process. Some birds can be very stubborn about only wanting to eat seeds, and some only want certain seeds. The conversion process can take many weeks to accomplish if you have a stubborn bird.

Once the bird is converted, they become teacher birds for other new birds. "monkey see, monkey do" making later conversions a LOT easier.

I have some birds that given a choice, they will now eat pellets rather than seeds, others will only eat the seeds, and others will eat both.
