Java finch/Rice bird owners - Im seeking your advice

Post by RigorMortisKitten » Thu Dec 15, 2011 5:19 pm

I find rice birds very interesting - they seem to be smart little birds, and they are also very cute. Im thinking about getting a pair if everything goes well with my 4 society finches (i would build an aviary for just the javas, though)

So my questions to all you rice bird owners are:
* How is it to have java finches ? Do you think they are less scared of human contact than other finches ? Are they more easily tamed than the smaller finches ? Tell me all about housing javas :P

* Do you house your javas alone, or with other birds ? What is the best for them - having one single pair, or a flock ? Is it possible to have a male+male pair, or a female+female pair ?

I really appreciate your answers! [-o<

Java finches sing a lot and quite nice, almost as good as the canaries. I have 5 pairs of Java and the males sing as soon as dawn comes up. You can put them in with other finches, but if you have a lot of them in the same flight/aviary they would dominate the flock. I have a pair on 5 eggs now should hatch soon, other pairs layed eggs but they abandoned the nests. Sometimes the pair can be grumpy toward others pairs. Java finches do bite and it hurts, becareful if catch them with your barehand. Overall, they're fun and hardy birds to keep.

Java Sparrows are nice easy-to-keep birds. They are very smart. They can be fingertamed, with some work, if you start when they are very young and know what you are doing - adults are pretty much untameable though. I wrote an article about how to do it, if you are interested.

Normal untamed Java Sparrows are not as flighty as some smaller finches, if you are calm and make slow movements around them. But they are fairly active. Mine love green food, hemp seed, and home made egg food as treats - though their normal diet is finch or parakeet seed/pellet mixes. Javas also love to bathe and will use their water bowl if you don't supply them with a little bird bath tub. A flower pot saucer with water will work too. They will bathe every day if you let them - and there's no reason they shouldn't.

I agree with Don's comments about the fact that they get along with most other birds but they can dominate if they are the majority. And they are bigger than most other finches so they may dominate just because of their size, without intending to. They do have large powerful beaks and can supposedly hold their own in a cage with a parakeet (budgie), which is not the case for other finches.

Java Sparrows are pretty social though they squabble a bit sometimes. You should always keep at least 2. But they will like being in a bigger flock too. My only suggestion is: if you put up nest boxes, put up more boxes than you need to stop competition for nest sites. Javas also like to sleep in nest boxes all year. Lastly, avoid buying your Javas at the same place because they are frequently all related - a "pair" may actually be 2 siblings from the same nest and they should not be bred together (this goes for any finches).

Here are photos of my tame Javas over the years. Some have tamed easily - others have been very stuborn. They are not as easy to tame as parakeets and I have a feeling that some people might never get the knack of taming them, because you have to very patient and calm. You may need to work at it and you pretty much have to start with juveniles right out of the nest that you cage separately while doing the initial taming. Once fully tame, they can get very friendly however.

Here is a rare photo where I got all 3 of Javas to sit together.

These 3 Javas I had in the 1990s were very tame - they are not wing-clipped in these photos. They could fly and would even come when I called them. Here they are outside on my screened porch.

This baby White Java finger tamed in one day because the other one I had was already extremely tame.

These are 2 I had more recently.

Perched on my leg - they liked to fly around my house.

Here is the same Gray Java with another Gray one. After my very tame White Java died, these 2 Gray Javas got wild again. I can let them out and they will return to their cage without problems - but they will not sit on my finger any more. I think the original Gray Javas are a llittle harder to tame and keep tame, than the White and Fawn mutations. My experience has been, if you have an already tame one, and get an untamed baby, you can tame the new young bird easily - but if you have a tame one and get a wild adult, both birds can end up untame.

I had Javas when I was a kid, and I kept them with Budgies without problems.

I tried keeping two pairs in my current large colony avairy, and I found they generally got on with the other Finches, but they did cause problems in a couple of ways; When they had kids, the kids were very curious and playful and would climb all over the other Finch nests and even look inside them. Aside from that, when I bought a pair of Gouldians they wanted to breed and started using a nest box, but the problem was a fawn male Java I had kicked them out every now and then for no apparent reason. He never slept in it and he didn't have a mate at the time so goodness knows what his attachment was with that box. As soon as I saw that I reluctantly decided to get rid of them, and the Gouldians then had 12 kids in 2 clutches before I took the boxes away. I have just given the boxes back after several Months and they have started again.

Thank you for your answers! :) I appreciate that you took the time to answer my questions!

Nipper06 - tamed javas would be very fun to have, but i think i would have to start out with adults, since java breeders dont seem to be very common here in Sweden. I have 4 society finches - and they love to take baths too and have the possibility to do so every day in their bird bath :) so i would be sure to give the javas places to bathe too.

It makes me happy that it is possible to keep javas with budgies, since i want to have a pair of budgies too in the future. The javas and the budgies will live in a separate aviary though, no small finches in there - they have their own place to live :)

I love your pictures by the way ^_^ its fantastic to see that you've managed to tame your javas! They are indeed beautiful birds!

I'll keep in mind that i should get javas from different places, or from a breeder who can guarantee me that they are not related!

i have a pair of javas now and they are amazing birds :D they are super smart and have a great song. their courtship dance is a pleasure to watch as they both hop up and down while singing. they are really intelligent and know what is going on all the time around them.

i had my pair in a very large cage with some other finches and it really didn't work for me. the pair was pretty territorial of one corner of the cage (even though there are no nests in there). the other thing is that i don't think that they know how big their feet and beaks are, so at times they would literally step on my shaftail female and squish her into the ground to get to the food. at that point when i saw that a few times i knew i needed to move them to their own cage. the breeder that i got them from said that they were colony bred, so maybe they had to be a bit aggressive to survive amongst a big flock of javas.

all that said they are amazing birds with tons of personality! i hope that in the future i will be able to move the pair into one of my community cages to live with my other similar sized finches. they are super smart and their song is incredible! i say go for it and get a pair!

I'm not sure if I've managed to tame my flock of gray java sparrows, or if they just think I am a big food tree that gives them annoying kisses all the time.

We first got a pair from my father-in-law, and after some turmoil in the beginning, they laid 8 new eggs out of which 6 hatched. All healthy babies (unlike the first batch before we got them) but we waited too long to be able to hand feed them and only managed to hand feed the runt like 3 times. But somehow I managed to spend enough time with them (I am a house wife) to get them used to me.

So now, while the parents don't really follow me at all anymore, the babies all fly to me regularly and sit on my head, shoulders, hands, anywhere really lol
Which is why I think I am a tree! However, almost all babies BITE, a Lot. So unless they're intending to nap on your hand, they will probably think you are food. This for me is probably because I tamed them using seeds in my hand for them to eat. Except now they also try to eat my hands, legs, feet, etc... lol
They even broke skin once. But I can't find information if this is normal or not. Anyway, they don't bite to hurt me or anything, I doubt they realise that it hurts. So for the most part they're just my cute babies that I demand cuddles from lol

noacastle that's really sweet! What was your process to get the babies so socialized? I've handled baby society finches and kept them tame for a few weeks but so far their wild instincts always win out in the end. I do have two that will sit on and eat from my hand though.

I have a breeding pair of Javas. Normals but she is split to pied. They are raising one chick and it is just starting to feather out. They are in a cage by themselves and have been since I got them. They aren't flighty. Mine are peaceful, calm, and curious. The dog (she's almost a 50lb dog) sticks her nose up to the cage and they just look at her. Mine love mealworms and he will push his woman out of the way to get all of the worms. That's the only time he is pushy with her though. If she comes out of the nest and he doesn't go in, she fusses at him until he does. And if he isn't sitting right beside the nest while she is in it, she gripes at him. They totally love each other though. He wipes his beak, does a funny hopping dance, and sings a pretty song. I just got them a HUGE flight cage and they will move in when the chick is fledged and eating on its own. :) Lovely birds!!
