Herbs

Post by tovis » Sat Feb 25, 2012 3:52 pm

We want to add some potted plants to our cage, which herbs are okay for finches?

We are thinking rosemary, thyme, oregeno and sage.

I know Thyme and Rosemary are alright, but not sure about Sage or Oregano. Many birds like Elderberry and Lavender or Milk Thistle.

I think most of the common cooking herbs would be OK. Be aware that your birds will quickly shred potted plants, so it is a good idea to have extra potted plants ready and swap them out before they are totally destroyed.

So far they have not touched them. Also my orange cheeks have not done anything with the nest I put in.

Curious, how do I put those little bird icons in my signature?

I have herd that not all herbs are good for birds, i believe i have seen somewhere recently that parsly may not be good for them--bird talk magazine may have ran an article on this recently. i also recently found out that mushrooms are not good for birds, i always enjoyed them myself and a few weeks ago i gave my parrot some and he turned his nose up at them and i'm glad he did because the next day i find out that they can be harmful to birds--so its probably best to do research before offering anything new to our feathered friends--bird talk runs good articles on such things, the finch information center may have something also.

It is a very wonderful thing indeed, when you become friends with those that wear feathers and eat seed.

I moved this from the Housing forum to Diet and Nutrition.

Also, I think if you Google or search on the Finch Forum website for "Safe or Unsafe Plants for birds", you'll get a good list or two (I just don't have time right now to do it).
