Cage... From The Garbage..

Post by DanteD716 » Mon Apr 09, 2012 5:15 pm

 Well, when ever my uncle sees a birdcage in the garbage on garbage day, he takes them.

Well, he just called my and said, "Dante, I found a cage for you." Apparantly, it's real nice, has perches, a couple toys, and a nestbox, just needs a bit of cleaning. (I will problay discard or bleach most of it) He said it would be great for the canary.  =D>

Canary, new garbage cage, and he gave me the mesh to make my new flight, great Easter gifts from him!!!

Anyways, how should I go about disinfecting it, and has anybody else done this? I know my uncle has a few cages (some actually nice) that he has seen next to the garbage bins.

Thats great :)
If it was me, I would throw out the perches and nest, and just keep the cage.
Make sure its cleaned/disinfected really well.

Yes, I will probaly throw that stuff away, if it is a plastic nest I can bleach it with the toys, my budgie is always getting bored and I am constantly adding new toys  as for perches, I make my own anyways

Dante, an easy way to do it is to find a strong, large garbage bag -- and fill it with water from your outdoor faucet and add just a bit of bleach (depending on how much water you add). I also add just a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Put the cage inside the bag with the bleach water and (holding the top of the bag) shake vigorously to soak every part of the cage.

Then, let the cage soak overnight or so in the bag. Take a scrub brush to the cage (using the bleach water) and rinse with the hose next day.

What a great uncle you have. It's good to recycle! :)

i put my cages in the shower and spray them with a bleach mixture, then i put the shower on and rinse it really well, then i air dry them for a day or so. I may repeat the procedure if i think it needs further disinfecting.

Dante, fill the tub up a bit and add about a cup of bleach. Put the cage in and let each side soak for 15 minutes each side, bottom and top, and tray. Rinse well and set in the sun to dry and break down any bleach residue.

Soaking 15 minutes will disinfect it (recommended by the vet I use) and setting it in the sun will also help kill any fungus spores as well as break down the bleach residue. You can bleach the cups if there are any.

Any perches...toss.

Bleach won't work disinfect under the poop.
So get all the poop off first. That will require a good wet wash/scrubbing.
Then give it the bleach treatment to disinfect.

Dante ifyou do as Gary suggests and give it a good soapy scrub first, rinse it really well before bleaching. Some dish soap can not be mixed with bleach, please be careful...also do this in a well ventilated area.
