Causes of Hatchlings dying?

Post by Tiffany » Tue Aug 28, 2012 9:39 am

Hi, Yesterday morning I checked my Zebra finch nest and the youngest hatchling 5 days old had passed away. He/she had an empty crop so I thought it wasn't being fed enough. Last night I checked the nest again and the older chick 7 days old was breathing through his mouth you could hear a clicking noise and he was blowing bubbles as he was breathing. This morning I checked on him and he had passed away. He also had an empty crop.

Back story:
About a week or so ago before the eggs hatched the female started throwing up. I removed her. I gave her Apple Cider Vinegar for about a week now and she is still separated. She seems fine. As if she never got sick but I still don't want to chance putting her back in the cage with the male even though the chicks have died.

What could be causing this? Thank you.

Clicking noises, open mouth breathing, and in bad cases, bubbles or wet spots around the nose are all signs of air sac mites (ASM)

Nothing came out of his nose the bubbles were coming out of his mouth.

I dont think it was ASM at all. I would lean towards respiratory infection of some sort.
Wish I could be of more help :(

If they were coming out the mouth I would say respiratory as well. Looking back and reading the female symtpoms it could have also been gastro intestinal.
