Zebra Finches and Meal Worms

Post by Vesuvius » Sat Sep 01, 2012 8:35 am

Hi,

I have a male (Pumpkin) and a female (Blossom) zeb finch. I know she has laid at least 1 egg as I saw yolk remnants on the floor as it had obviously smashed. I have provided a nest for them but they seem to use it just for sleeping and the male is trying to make a nest on a perch even though its not working:/ Im not sure she will have a clutch, even though I would welcome it.

They have oyster shell and egg food (the dried stuff, they wont eat boiled egg), I try them with fruit and veg but they turn their noses up at this. I have now tried dried meal worms which they devour very quickly but dont want to over feed if this is bad for them. Is it safe or necessary to have them on offer all the time? If not, how often should I feed them? Should I be feeding them at all?

Thanks for you help :)

The dried mealworms should be a treat, so just a few per day would be plenty. As far as fruit, most of mine do not eat fruit either. With veggies, sometimes you just have to keep trying different things to see what they may like. Also, if you keep offering it, even if they don't eat it now, they may eventually give it a try. Dark greens such as kale, collard greens (you may not have these in the UK), chickweed, dandelion are good, as well as broccoli, carrots, cucumber, corn--just keep experimenting with them.

Thank you for your reply and will take up what you said. I do keep on trying with veg, hopefully one day they will learn from my budgies as they eat theirs lol Many thanks.
