mites..........

Post by sk282012 » Tue Jan 08, 2013 11:29 pm

hello friends.

recently i have bought goldians and society finches chicks(mix colony)

some society finches scratch their body so much, and few have disturbe feather due to this.i am suspecting mites.

what you advise for treatment.
1. ivermactin in water?
2. scatt?

scatt not avaiable at the moment but i have another product from holland which have .3 percent ivermactin but will be difficult to use because i have so many birds.if ivermactin in water is dangerous for birds, then i will go for it.

best wishes

I don't know if you would be able to get this, but Avian Insect Liquidator is my favorite for external parasites. It is extremely safe. Check out the ingredients to see if there is anything similar available to you.

S76 and/or Iverlux are ivermectin products, with slippery elm added. They both are .8g/L, if that helps.

I agree with Sally AIL or a similar product will work best of external mites. AIL will also give you 6 week residual protection.
The ingredients are Permethrin, Piperonyl Butoxide, Methoprene. If you don't have AIL available there are several insect sprays with those same ingredients readily available in pet stores.
good luck

I always presume, when I get a new bird, that its likely to have SOMETHING! - whether that's worms, other intestinal parasites, mites, air sac mites, lice, psittacosis etc etc . I always segregate the new bird for at least two weeks, and also get a check-up done by my Bird Vet, who will use the direct methods and test for all these and give them medication for all of these! I find this is the only way to be sure my birds are healthy.

Is it common for Zebra finches to scratch alot? I cannot tell if they are itchy or just behaving normal. I am new to raising them.
