1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
Hello- I am considering an already built indoor aviary with 1 x 1 hardware cloth. Is that too big for finches? Thanx So Much!

Re: 1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
The largest I would go is 1/2 x 1/2 inch. Many recommend 1/4 x 1/4 inch if you need to keep out snakes and mice.

Re: 1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
Thank You Debbie~ It would be for indoors so critters wouldn't be a problem. I just can't visualize 1 x 1 as far as the Finches getting out. I hope to go see it today.

Re: 1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
Also depends on what species of finches.
Definitely too big for the small waxbills.
Maybe OK for the larger finches, but the fledglings or smaller ones might get through.
I would prefer 1/2" square mesh.

Re: 1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
It's unfortunately too big for finches. If you think they can get caught in something, they will certainly do it. I have learned the hard way. I would go with 1/2" or below. I would also go with a coated mesh or a heavy duty plastic mesh.

1x1 is too big. Those little buggers will slip right through that mesh, I would go with 1/2" or smaller.

Re: 1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
It still may be worth checking out. For an indoor aviary, you can use the inexpensive plastic mesh from Lowe's or Home Depot (you still want 1/2" mesh). If the price is right, you could replace the 1" mesh with the 1/2" without spending a lot more money.lyzzyjayne wrote: GREAT! Thanx guys so much! That will save me a trip going to see it.![]()

Re: 1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
Welll.... Sally I did go by and look at it. It was hand built and is gorgeous! It was a labor of love a gal built for her pet Squirrel she raised from a "pinkie" and he lived 10 YEARS!! It is $400 and she would have to take it apart to get it out of that room and reassemble it wherever it's going. She also said she would switch out the wire for me there is 1/2 inch already on part of it. That is all included in the price. I'm thinking I would want to invest in something with more length than height? What do you think? Here is a pic.

Re: 1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
It really is Lori! I am just wondering if it would be enough length to work? I need ya'll's opinions. It would be for 2 Gouldian pairs one Society pair and one Canary.

What are the dimensions?
I would not put a canary in with the finches.

Re: 1 x 1 Hardware Cloth
It is lovely, but several things to consider. There seems to be just one large door. How will you clean the bottom of the aviary, service food/water/bath dishes without birds escaping? How is it put together? If it comes apart in panels with screws, then it will be easy to disassemble and reassemble. If it is put together with nails, it is difficult to disassemble without damaging some areas of the aviary.
Space is always a consideration, so sometimes you have to go with taller rather than wider, but if space is not a consideration, wider is always better.
