outdoor "field" trips...

Post by EyesofFreedom » Thu Jul 11, 2013 10:20 pm

So for those of us that don't have these huge aviaries that are immobile I was wondering how many of you take your birds outside...?

My F040 has wheels ;)

I have those smaller white flight cages right now, and I find it convenient to take them outside to clean the trays. My finches are sort of on the fence about whether they like it though; they perk up and dance around, but then the moment a wild bird flies by overhead, they hunker down like its blitzkrieg or something. One time a hummingbird buzzed around one of the flights inspecting their red plastic toy; the finches flew right over and puffed up like "This is OUR cage and you can buzz off!" They weren't much bigger than the hummingbird though, so he wasn't too impressed. XD

my birds go out on our balcony when the weather is good, they seem to love it, it also give me a chance to give their area a really good clean and vacuum!
Totally owned by a spoodle called Pepsi, 4 very cute zebra finches (2 fawn females, 1 ??? and 1 white male) and about 60 guppies! And loving every minute of it!

I don't take my birds outside, mainly because the cages take to much effort to move. My budgies are in a large flight that is on my dresser with my Zebras on a slightly smaller cage next to them.

Most of the cages are too big to move.

And ever since my friend told me about being brushed by the wings of the owl who was trying to snag her mini-yorkie pup off the leash that she was holding and standing next to him with, and that hawk brushed against my front windows twice trying to hunt the small wild birds outside in the bushes, I wouldn't dare. The wildlife is way too bold here.

I keep my doves in an outdoor aviary year round.

I occasionally take my Greater Vasa parrot and Pacific Parrotlet outside in a cage, but I never take my finches outside.

I have considered bringing them out onto my balcony which is attatched to my former bird room, but we have hawks in our area, and I wouldn't want other birds landing on the cages potentially giving my bird a disease or mites

I'm a little worried now when the cats are out in the screen porch, not sure the old screening would resist a hunting hawk...

I have a two tierded shelf with wheels that we bought at Homedepot. The shelves are adjustable and two flight cages fit perfectly so I can wheel them outside. I have zip locked the cages to the shelf so there are no mishaps. The birds get sunshine and love being outside. I just wheel them back to the screened in porch or back inside. This works so well for me. I do use a bird safe insecticide on the cages just in case.

Usually only when necessary, such as to paint or when something causes smoke or fumes in the house. I have taken canaries out in the sun on occasion to show people their true colors. My back patio is screened in so predators are not a concern. Bob
