Help! Canary with eye swollen shut

Post by limeslide » Thu Aug 08, 2013 5:32 pm

My canary, Apollo, began having problems... a few days ago, his eye was balding, and was not very healthy looking, he preferred to turn his head than look from his balding eye, otherwise he is very healthy, will readily eat and drink water, and fly, and chirp... regular canary things... I noticed today, a growth underneath his eye, his eye is closed shut, but now he rubs it against perches and etc... he still shows normal behavior... but has a tendency to stay on the ground... his reflexes are slower too, and did not fly away when i went in to provide water, i almost managed to grab him, something impossible before, before he fluttered away... what is the problem?? He seems healthy otherwise, this is his second summer with me so i know it is not the weather, clean water is provided daily, fresh seed too... sometimes i offer broccoli and water, and the birds are safe from the outdoors... their cage is sand, cleaned bi monthly, otherwise i scoop out poop every once in a while...

the only difference is that a few days ago, ants have tried making a nest underneath one of the water bowls, luckily, i change their water every day so the ants had no time to settle, could it have been an ant bite? i doubt it, his eye would have swollen completely the first day....

what is wrong with my canary? what can i do to help him? he seems very uncomfortable.

Could it be a sinus infection?
Maybe the pictures on this page can help you diagnose it:

I used sovereign silver for my canaries eye injury and it worked great. I got it on amazon.com and it came in 1 day. Best of luck with him.

I would at minimum try colloidal silver and a broad spectrum antibiotic. Better yet, a trip to a vet if you can afford it. This is one of those things that a vet can probably cure easily IMO. Bob

Ouch! That looks nasty! Definitely time for a visit to the vet.
