Plants in cages

Post by Betty Blair » Thu Oct 24, 2013 3:43 pm

What type of plants do you use in the cages(ex: real, plastic, silk)? Need ideas for new plants. Thank you.

Hi Betty,

All sorts of options! Hobby Lobby has the BEST selection, Michaels has not as much. Silk or plastic. Vines, sprays, potted, go crazy! Stay away from anything with sparkles or beads.

I had a variety of real plants too - but the organic soil used had a funky odor. You could smell something 'not quite right' when you came in the house. Stopped using the real ones.

But - they all get home-grown wheat grass. They will pick it down in about 3 days - then replace. Everyone loves it - the Purple Grenadiers will actually roll around in it. Very cute.

I would only recommend using plastic plants. I've had some birds get their nails stuck on the silk plants. There was even a time I found a small piece of it caught on one of my gouldians beaks. Could have ended badly.

I find fake plants at Goodwill and garage sales.

I use plastic plants from Hobby Lobby. They rotate their 50% off sales through the store, so it seems like about once a month, they have a sale on their greenery. That is when I stock up. I have gotten a few things at the Dollar store, and they work OK for plants to fasten on the outside of the cages to offer privacy, but they are too skimpy for the birds to build their nests in.
