handling baby zebras

Post by mea » Mon Apr 28, 2008 2:58 pm

Hi all,
Again, i'm a new mom to 2 baby zebra finches. I was trying to get a good picture of them for my students, I know this is probably a dumb question but is it O.K. to handle them? Will the parents reject them? They are about 11 days old. Mea

Zebras are usually very tolerant of their babies being handled. At 11 days, they will be fledging in just a few days.

Sally is right, you should have no problem taking them from the nest and putting them back. Zebras usually don't mind at all.
Are you a teacher? I teach kindergarten and we had a pair of zebras as our class pet. They laid eggs and raised their babies right in the classroom with 20 five year olds running around. It was a great experience for all!
