Harley2013 I would avoid feeding any bird onions or tomatoes. Hopefully someone else can give some feedback and either confirm or deny and clarify that.

Hi there,

Canaries probably shouldn't eat any bulbs (onion or garlic) or non fruit like marrow vegetables (sweet potato, Potato) as these tend to have different effects in animals. Dogs react very badly to onion and garlic, and it might have a diuretic effect for such small birds.

Canaries seem to love destroying/eating green leafy salad and vegetables like brocholli, brochollini, peas, beans and similar. Mine also eat cooked or shredded carrot. Mine have also nibbled at apple, pear, chopped up grapes and orange slices.

I also have given my birds seed grass, and several times, baby salad seedlings (which they really loved!!).

Brochollini in Australia is a type of long stalked brocholli. It tastes pretty much the same. My birds love it because they can perch on the stalk and rip it to pieces. I'm not sure whether they breed brochollini overseas, sorry!

Zebrafincher they must certainly do!! Broccolini is very common in my area at least. It looks exactly like broccoli except more stalk and less buds.. and the buds are scattered and small as opposed to one big top. I prefer broccoli because I shave the florets off because my birds won't touch anything that isn't minced to oblivion or basically the size of seeds. Anything larger to them is a threat in their lives, lol.

Probably not good for birds but I certainly love it! (and I make it pretty good, too) Very popular middle eastern dish. :) Bob
