Mixed Flight
I am thinking about adding a pair of waxbills to my mixed flight. I was curious to see what you all thought would be the best species to go with. There are currently 5 finches in this flight; M/M Stars, M/F Owls and 1 M Society. The waxbills I am considering would be a M/F pair of either Gold Breasted, Orange Cheek or St. Helenas Waxbills. They are all listed at the FIC as passive species, however we all know that many finches haven't read the chart
. Thanks in advance for your input, Ginene

Re: Mixed Flight
I have little experience with the Orange-cheeks, but of the other two species, IMO St. Helena's are the most passive, followed by the Goldbreasts. Is your flight one of the HQ double flights? If so, be careful with the tiny waxbills--some of them can get out of the HQ double flight.

Re: Mixed Flight
Yes Sally, my flight is the HQ Double Flight. That's good to know
. Maybe adding waxbills wouldn't be a good idea. I will have to rethink this. I considered Gouldians, but I have a Society finch in this flight and worry about possible dormant disease. Hmmm...

I have black cap and gold breasted in a flight with...lady gouldians, cut throat, owl, star, shaft tails, cordon blue, society, silver bills, canary's, whyduals, button quale, all in the same aviary and they are all paired, I have had three gouldian , two shaft tail, and one cordon blue clutch. the birds do get a little grumpy now and then but for the most part they live in peace.

Re: Mixed Flight
Ginene I have a pair of Orange-cheeked Waxbills, a pair of Societies, and a pair of zebras in the same flight. And they all do wonderfully. There was a second pair of zebras in there but I recently moved them into their own cage and am planning on doing that with the other pair of zebras. I'll probably move my lone female Owl and a pair of Gouldians in with the Orange-cheeks after that. But we'll see as that's all still in the planning stages as i shuffle everyone around.

Learning Finch
Wow!!! That sounds like a dream aviary. I bet the fact that you have a lot of space for your birds helps. Mine are in the HQ Double flight...I wish I had more space for them. I actually put the divider back in this morning and gave 1 side to my M/M stars & M/F Owls and the other side to my lone M BCCB & M Society. I am going to hold off on any new additions for now, since I have hopes for a BCCB hen and hopes for a society hen for my 2 bachelors
.
Hopefully the society hen will be one that I breed myself, as my hen is sitting on eggs right now

Colt...I have always LOVED Orange Cheeked Waxbills and thought I would definitely have them one day. But I have to say the Gold Breasts are Gorgeous too!!! As of now I have decided to just hold out and wait for a BCCB hen and a society hen too.Ginene I have a pair of Orange-cheeked Waxbills, a pair of Societies, and a pair of zebras in the same flight. Re: Mixed Flight
yes I'm quite the addict
That is just one of my two aviarys. I have quite a few pairs of many different finch. I,m hoping they breed to help pay for all the food. I'm just not a breeder so I wouldnt know how much to ask and where to sell

Re: Mixed Flight
I myself am quite the addict too...but am closely monitored by a cage counting husband
.Lol!!! I am in no way a breeder either, although I do have GS and Societies on eggs!!! Most of my flock are males...I have only 3 hens. My plan was to just enjoy my flock and not deal with all of the issues that come along with breeding. But I get weak when I see photos of other people babies and so 2 of my 3 hens got nests
. My next breeding venture will be my owl pair this spring. In the meantime, I am excited to see how my 2 current clutches hatch out. As for pricing and where to sell...the forum is a great place to find wonderful homes for your juveniles. My entire flock came from Martie (Mod) and Sally's (Mod) best friends. The people here can also give you suggestions on how to price your juveniles. Any babies that come from my flock have families already waiting for them...thankfully!

Re: Mixed Flight
I love the OCW. They are darling. Male has a warbling little song and they are very sweet. Not too shy and love to cuddle.
And I wish I could find Gold-breasts somewhere local-ish. But no one seems to have them.
Good luck finding ladies for your birds. ;)

Colt...you live in TEXAS!!! There has got to be GBWs somewhere near you! I am SOOO jealous of all of the AMAZING breeders out there and bird marts that go on in Texas! My hubby wants to move there in a few years...my condition is that I get to have an amazing outdoor aviary!

You would think but I haven't found any yet. And that sounds like a great reason to move. ;)
