Dried veggie mix in bulk section at grocery store?

Post by katlovesaandw » Thu Feb 06, 2014 2:51 pm

Reading the section on egg mix, veggies, etc.
Our grocery store has a large bulk section and I know they have a dried veggie mix for soups. It is small, chopped mix. I will check tomorrow to make sure what it has in it and if it is ok stuff for the birds but since it is small chopped already.... I would think it would be great to add to the egg mix once it was rehydrated?
And I can buy large amount and have it on hand for easy mixing?
Anyone tried this?
Bad to do or worth a shot?

I know no salt or additives or extra crud.... but if it is ok veggies and greens just dried...?!

If there's nothing bad in it, I don't see why not.

Do check the list of veggies against the good and bad foods list carefully, tho.

Reminds me of herb salad, which many people feed their finches. Just check for additives, preservatives, etc. If it is all natural/organic, it should be fine.

Cool, that is what I thought! Will take my phone and snap a pic of ingredients and then buy a small batch to inspect and see how it is. Then will double check good/bad list once home and if so... we will try it.

Ok, checked and it has dried tomato, carrot, spinach, broccoli and onion.
I checked the safe food list and these are all ok in moderation.
I am planning on hydrating a small amount, adding to some boiled egg and shell, add a little cooked kale and see if they like it.

Sound ok?

Hopefully an expert will have info for you. I am interested to hear what they say and to see how your birds like the veggies.

Me too! I checked and double checked the ok and not ok food section. All veggies listed in this dry mix are listed ok in moderation.
48 hours with these birds and unknown if they ate or tried egg/veggie mix at their previous home but I want to try to get them to.... and since this is chopped small... would seem like part of the work is done for me!!LOL And I can store it easily this way.

If they have not had it before don't be surprised if they ignore it, but be persistent. it may take them a while to realize that it is food. Eventually one will be bold enough to try it.

Something else to feed them, if you aren't already, is romaine lettuce. It seems like almost all birds love it. I just rinse a leaf and put it whole on the cage floor. They flock to it. A day without lettuce is a day they wonder why they even bothered waking up.

Cool Donna!
Good to know! Does Green Leaf or Red Leaf work as well or is Romaine the preferred?

And I figured they would ignore. Going to make a small batch and if they don't touch....no biggie. Will pass onto my rats or chickens so it won't go to waste. Will just keep serving.
I have noticed that 1 has to do something and then they ALL start doing it. Makes me think of Mikey will try it, he eats anything commercial from when we were kids!LOL
I just want them to eat more than just seed and millet sprays and be healthy!

Yes, mine eat green and red leaf lettuce, and at a pinch on the rare occasions when I've had it and nothing else, iceberg, not for any nutrition, but just to make them think they've had leaves.

I prefer Romaine because it holds up better. The leaf lettuces wilt very quickly, not that that stops them. I leave for work mid afternoon and leave their lettuce in the cage, and don't retrieve it until I get up late morning. Sometimes I see them picking at the unappetizing leftovers then. Yes, we're told not to leave veggies in the cage, but it's apparently never harmed mine, and with my schedule, it's the best I can do.

I would check the salt or sodium content...there are places to buy dried and powdered veggies on line that are just the individual veggie or fruit, no hidden ingredients...if the mix has onion in it do not use it. Onion is toxic to birds, garlic is a no also (in the onion family)

Hi Kat... I would go fresh greens and fruit, thats what my boys eat and they love it and are very healthy.
Romaine
carrot greens along with the carrot hanging up
beet stalks and leaves
kale
rappini
swiss chard(red)
Broc
spinach(a little bit)
Apples
grapes
dry meal worms(broken up)
Hard boiled egg( mashed with shell)
Pears , parsley, cukes.
That should give you lots to chose from and I promise they will love it.
Goodluck.
