Egg food

Is there a recommended amount of egg food that I should be giving to my Finches? I provide them a plate every morning. It is usually gone when I return from work. I just don't want to over do it. If that is possible.

Hi.
I offer an egg every day or second day. I boil my eggs and mash them onto a plate, shell and all. My guyes enjoy it along with the test of their tegular food, but they never finish it all. My opinion is, that it's there if they want it and they can eat as much as they want.

I usually give non breeding or molting birds about a tablespoon of egg per pair 2 or 3 times a week. Breeding and molting birds get egg everyday. I spread it thinly on a dish so that it drys out rather then goes bad, next morning I remove any that is left which is never much if any at all.
I boil the egg and when cool run it through a garlic press. The egg comes out looking like bits of worms. I then add about a teaspoon of handfeeding formula per egg. The handfeeding formula drys out the egg a bit and adds all vitamins and minerals they need.
The shell I put in a separate dish in as big a pieces as I can take off the egg. They love to break off pieces and investigate the shells. Gives them a bit of stimulation to curb boredom. I never microwave the shells because I found them to be much more brittle and sharp when I did.

Maybe I'm overdoing it.... I feed egg food 4TBL spoons for 16 finch....2 TBL spoons dried insect blend.....1 cup fresh dark green salad mix ( not the cheap iceburg stuff) 2 TBL spoons veggie mix (carrots,peas,green beans,corn) blinded , a banana slice and three grapes...daily.... the fruit is mainly for my white eyes.

Hi Debbie, Just an idea I run my egg shell thru a coffee grinder after microwaving that way they are powdered and don't have sharp edge issues.

I use the coffee grinder for things like that too like oyster shells and charcoal.
My birds enjoy playing and breaking off pieces of the egg shell so I leave the pieces as big as I can when I peel hard boiled eggs. If you don't microwave or bake the shells they aren't as brittle, I just give them the shell right off the hard boiled egg. It also helps me know that they are eating it because you'll see chips taken out all around the edges. I also figure it's giving them something to do rather then just sit around and perch.

Hi there,

whatever works for you! My finches and canary won't eat egg - or eggfood! I have to use a supplement, and offer greens and other foods to them. I also have supplemented food as well.
