Stop pecking my shabby chic lamps!

Seriously though

New flight space
My birds, which I got just over a week ago, are now allowed out into art studio for exercise. It is such a joy to see them fly around in tandem in a big space. They love it and the aviary door is open most of the day for them now. I won't stop letting them into the room, even if I can't solve this problem.

Problem
One of my canaries (only 7-8 weeks old) keeps pecking everything it lands on. The canary does this inside the aviary too, though less so. Could be a boy or a girl not been able to sex yet.

New to bird keeping, I chose to keep finches (and a couple of canaries) as I have childhood memories of budgies wrecking my grandmothers home chewing everything to bits. My other older canary is angelically O:-) behaved with regard to pecking.

My question
May I ask. Is this pecking youth related or sex related? Is the little bird testing things with it's beak?
My older canary does not do this (again unsure of the sex).

Distraction?
Can anyone offer any tips about exciting things to peck which would distract away from my hand restored vintage lamps :(( I am already thinking to make my art studio an extension of the aviary in the sense I can have perches toys etc on walls, ceilings in the room for the birds.

Are they reflective?

I've found that most of the things they peck have a reflection. In that case, they usually perceive it as another bird and can be very persistent.

Hi Stevie,

Purchase a couple of cheap plastic plants and position them near your lamp and around the room. Canaries usually go crazy for anything that looks like a plant. Keeps them busy for ages.

Good luck! :D

Edited to add it is not sex related. Canaries are generally great at chewing things if given the chance

Thank you. No wouldn't be that.

Can give this a go though may not work. They have lots of plastic plants in the aviary and don't touch them at all.

Does anyone else have any ideas?
