Oat Sprays?

Post by MiaCarter » Thu Jul 24, 2014 8:59 am

Does anyone feed oat sprays to their finches?

Do they eat them?

Petco is having a treat sale today and I saw a great price on these:

I know you feed these to small animals like guinea pigs.
But it seems like the birds might enjoy these too?

If nothing else, they'll be popular nesting materials! LOL

Yup, it is completely safe to give to the birds. Mine love it!

We feed oat hay to the horses (full of oat spray's) so my birds get it as a treat when I mix it in with the eragrostis for their nesting materials.

They're perfectly fine, except I'm not sure about the size being good for finches. I've seen them for parakeets on up to larger birds. They would probably love them in their nests if they don't eat them. :D

I buy them for mine. The Gouldians, lavenders and parrot finches like them. My societies ignore them. Sometimes the owls chew on them but not sure they eat them.....they like their oats pre hulled. The Lineolated Parakeets love them.

KarenB that's good to know the little birds like them too. I never fed them to my birds...in the sprays. I've seen them only in the package, with larger birds on the picture. :D

I got the idea to give them after harvesting wild grasses around my home and they were meet with relish. These are died, but totally within the size they can handle opening. It was a whim when I bought them. I was picking up hay for the African flight and they were there so I though what the heck. Once I determined that it was something they would eat, I tried giving it to the parakeets and they love the stuff. The budgies are still not too sure, but I still offer it to them thinking it will catch on for them, as well. For the Africans I toss them in with the hay, and they enjoy foraging for it.

KarenB while reading about your oat experience, I just remembered we have tons of seeds for planting. I have a 5lb vacuum sealed bag of oats and the same of wheat. I have seeds from when we were in a warmer climate...thought it would never grow here. Just Googled it and we can plant oats. They can be planted until the end of September. Cool Beans! Even still, I can try to feed the finches and parakeet the seeds, or grind them. They would have gone to waste and been forgotten if not for this post. :D
