My New Aviary

As I have mentioned it in another thread, here are a few pics of my new aviary and its inhabitants.

Nothing special. Constructed from aged pressure treated timber (was assured it was safe for use with birds by both the timber yard and breeders who I know that have used the same materials for their aviaries) and a mixture of 13mm (1/2") x 13mm and 13mm x 25mm (1") galvanised mesh (again assured it was safe for use in finch aviaries due to the finches not being cage chewers by nature like budgies or other hookbills).

Lots of space for flying! Is it connected to a shed, so the birds can get inside, or is that not a problem? I agree, treated wood and galvanized mesh have been used by many people for finches, as they do not chew like the hookbills.

No it is not connected to the shed. The far end is approximately 2" from the shed. It was the best place to put it in the garden!

Very nice and wood works well for finches. Just don't put a budgie in there

Seeing that you are in the UK, you will definitely have to close off a section of your aviary for winter. These little birds do not appreciate the cold at all.

Also be carefull adding gouldians and stars into the mix. You already have a lot of 'pushy' birds with the Zebra's and Java's, while the gouldians and stars are very passive and can easily be dominated. 50 birds is a lot for the size you have. Average of 1 square meter per pair of birds when working with aviary's. Very different to flight cage calculations.

Another couple pics to add.

Most of the Zebra's are home bred from an original purchase of 9 birds (2 males & 7 females) last year. No inbreeding that I have seen just yet but want to add some new blood lines in to the aviary before the young start getting amorous!
