The Story of a (Tame) Society Family, From Babies to Birds

Post by Sheather » Sat Aug 09, 2014 2:00 am

5.5 weeks ago, my seven various adult society finches built one super-sized nest and proceeded to stuff it with eleven eggs between them.

3 weeks ago, despite a few mishaps - a couple infertiles and the tragic cracking of two fertile eggs - the first new spark of live emerged into the light of the world.

Image

Tiny, pink, and helpless under his mother's breast, he who would be called Simba was a sight for sore eyes. However could this itty-bitty little creature ever survive in this big wide world?

Image

But Simba had not one, not two, not three or five but seven caring parents - or rather, four parents, an aunt, a big brother and a big sister - to help him on his journey. Never was Simba left alone, always he was cared for. And as Simba grew stronger each day, he was joined on his journey in time by two, three, four, then finally five more. Sylvan, Nimbus, Waffles, Cirrus....

Image

...and finally, the smallest of them all, tiny little Rain - five days smaller than any sibling, she would hatch after her kingdom's keeper had assumed all remaining eggs were infertile. He would be proved wrong. She was vibrant, and she too grew and grew.

Image

Though dwarfed by all of her siblings, this tiniest beauty was a fighter, and pushed her way through the chow line to dinner just as strongly as they.

At 13 days, her older siblings Simba and Nimbus would begin to resemble the birds they were. Their owner began to dilligently handle them, sometimes for an hour at a time, always making sure they were fed by very tolerant grown-ups beforehand.

Image

Trusting of their human friend, the adults would simply use this break time to stock up on groceries.

Image

All grew, and Rain, though younger, grew too, even amongst bigger and pushier siblings.

Image

Sylvan would become the quickest to mature, however, outspeeding even his older brother (who probably had different, naturally smaller parents than he, as the adults vary somewhat in size between them all). Sylvan would become the favorite of his human, and the most receptive to his affections.

Image

After a few weeks, all of the birds had begun to look like the finches they were as naked skin gave way to fleshy quills and finally, to bursting, beautiful fluffy feathers.

Image

The babies would grow more and more attached to their human daddy and spend longer and longer increments cuddled or at play with him during the days, giving their parents a well-deserved break.

Image

Sylvan really looked like a bird by 17 days.

Image

Rain less so, but catching up.

Image

Finally, at 20 days, Sylvan became the first to take to the air! If only landings were as easy. After much commotion, his caretakers finally figured out how to feed a nest-free baby bird.

Image

What a difference a week makes! The babies all in a row at 17 - 22 days of age. "We wanna fly, dad! Hurry up!"

Image

And fly they would! No baby flights for this group. Only the tallest roosts would do!

Image

But always, after a big flight, the group would return to me, their human daddy who gave them the best cuddles and a warm place to rest.

Image

Even as fledges, hours could go by where they'd want only to lay in my company. The sweetest little animals they had become, not even through hand-feeding, but simply providing companionship through prolonged and continued socialization as they grew, and hopefully continue to grow, into amazing adults.

Image

A few days more, a few longer flights, many more returns to daddy for a photo-op.

Image

A silly-looking yawn...

Image

And a nap.

Image

And here the babies lie now, just over 3 weeks old, rapidly becoming birds - but also, growing sweeter each day despite. The proof is definitely in the pudding. Finches can certainly be tamed, even if they're not hand-raised - so long as they learn early on the benefits of befriending that big awkward ape who rules their world, and all the love he can bring.

And this is all without the slightest food reward.

I love being a bird owner.

Haha thank you Mia!

The crested is actually Cirrus. We named the bunch as they hatched, before we could really see how they would look, so Waffles ended up being the fourth-born. He's the mostly brown one with the all-brown head. He is identical to his older brother Nimbus, only lacking the white forehead. Simba is the mostly brown bird with the white head, Sylvan is the mostly white one with the brown back, Rain is the fawn smooth-headed, and Cirrus is the fawn crested - a trait he gets from his dad, Albert, a silly-looking creature with a messy crest made of 4 floppy feathers. Cirrus though has somehow managed to inherit a full head of hair despite his dad's shortcomings!

Sheather Fabulous story & photos. I have read about some folks who hand feed finches to tame them. It's good to know that careful cuddling also works.

Wonderful story and photos! We mostly only hear of this kind of taming with handfeeding, so it's great to know that it can be done with love alone.

We are now all almost four weeks old and still like our human, though we're starting to really want to fly all the time and be with the other birds, and only want to sit still in the evening when we're tired. We still love our cheeks rubbed though! He has to take us into the bathroom or bedroom now because if our parents see us with our human, they yell at us and he doesn't want them to teach us to be afraid of him.

(he also finds it hard to photograph himself, humans are such awkward animals, how ever do they survive?)

Those are great pictures! It's good you're getting them used to being held. I'm sure the parents are worried. If they only understood how much you loved their babies! :D

They are now eating 60% of the time on their own, flying capably, and have fully obtained their feathery coats (except for the youngest two who are still sparse in the neck). The finches are 4 - 4.5 weeks old now and could be considered adolescents, no longer fledges or babies. They look like birds, and they don't feel like babies to hold anymore, all floppy and heavy, they carry themselves high and are light on their feet and are pretty close to all grown up.

So far, most of them are quite tame considering their age, by now most finches would have become fearful and flighty. Their personalities are distinct, though, and despite getting equal amounts of handling, Sylvan, Rain and Simba are very tame, whereas Cirrus, Nimbus, and especially Waffles are no longer very comfortable with being handled and run from me when I try to pick them up, whereas the other three still enjoy human attention. Even Waffles, however, allows a bit of petting when he's in the right mood still, and he's many steps ahead of his parents still, even the tamest of them.
Sylvan, happy as a clam to fly over, pose for the picture, and get some cuddlez.

Image

Simba, just as friendly though more nervous and high-strung.

Image

Waffles, whom did not want to be picked up, did not want his cheeks rubbed, did not want to come into the other room, and did not want a camera in his face, was very unhappy with this photo session and tried to fly away the whole time.

Image

Cirrus is fearful of being picked up but fairly content to sit on a hand and be pet after the fact.

Image

Rain, pretty easygoing and not bothered at all by handling, though neither does she seek out my attention like Sylvan or Simba. It's hard now to see her ruby eyes.

Image

Nimbus. Like her brother, she doesn't particularly enjoy handling any longer, though she's much more calm and accepts it rather than rebels.

Image

A few more days, and we'll be all weaned! I noticed with this bunch, due to so many parents feeding, that they were a bit late to begin picking at food on their own. Curiously, this bunch has also learned to bathe and drink before eating on their own! Isn't that strange?
