Squeemish Coworkers
So I found a source for wax worms online, so I thought I would try them out. I ordered 1000 each wax worms and mini meal worms and had them delivered to the office, because someone has to be present to sign for them. They came today. Yay! Moved over everyone's lunch in the fridge to make room for the box that they were shipped in. Great. They'll be good for the day! Happy day! I go on about my day.
Later my manager comes up and asks me to please take them out because the thought of them in there is just grossing everyone out. I just don't see the big deal. It's not like they are crawling around in there. They are inside a box inside plastic containers with sealed lids. Geez.

Yeah people seem to think that there's something wrong with us for having them! It's too annoying...

Re: Squeemish Coworkers
I put them in the door of the fridge which is ok. The amount I usually get I use them up in a week, so it's not an issue. I may not put all these in there, though. Too many. I was planning on tossing food in with them when I get them home tonight.

Which birds like the waxworms? I have thought about trying them.

The waxbills and parrot finches and owls. Pretty much all my birds except the societies, and I have even seen them try them. The waxbills for sure. Owls only when they have chicks to feed but they will eat them. Not sure about the Gouldians. I don't remember if I've seen them eat them, and I haven't offered them recently since they are not breeding.

Where do you work? An office? I think the type of job may make a difference in co-workers being upset about keeping the worms in the fridge. Our fridge at work is a mini one and would not hold anything beyond a cup of yogurt and some drinks. LOL.

Our fridge is average sized. I get their point but it's not like anything is going to come in contact with the box. I thought it was silly. Maybe it's just me.

LOL Been there!
I've worked in newspapers, television and radio my entire adult life, and in TV in particular you tend to get super prissy women (and men).
The radio folks tend to be more gritty. Being barefoot and in PJs wasn't unusual. LOL (And as you can imagine, they protested in a big way when the program director came up with the idea to mount cameras in the studios for live online feeds! Alas, they won and got to stay barefooted and PJ'd. LOL)
I've always been the creepy chick who wrangles stray animals in the parking lot and keeps live, injured birds in a box under her desk. LOL
You'd be surprised how many people are frightened by the thought of a sparrow in a box!
Another time, we had mice in the newsroom.
I thought it was hilarious to watch the prissy reporter chicks jumping on top of their desks.
....until they mentioned bringing in an exterminator!
So I went out and bought live traps and convinced the program director that I'd catch the entire lot. Just don't kill them!
It worked really well! I checked them daily and released them outside by the dumpster, alongside the colony of parking lot rats (whom I named and fed my scraps. Love me some rats.)
I don't think they realized that the live traps only hold them; don't kill them. I think they would have freaked out at the idea of a live mouse in a box. But nobody messed with them. They just rolled their chairs back when I came to crawl under the desk to perform daily trap checks!
So indeed, I feel your pain! Had my share of squeemish coworkers for sure!
Now I work at home, so I can work amidst my creatures as I was meant to! LOL
