ZEBRA QUESTION

Post by CHIRP » Thu Oct 30, 2014 5:12 am

Hullo all, my pair has now started feeding big time, the little ones are chirpy for the 2nd day, so they in all accounts should be about 5 days old, right....

QUESTION; I am a little worried they will change colours so fast that I wont be able to tell the difference anymore (BEFORE I separate them) between young ones and my pair.....

Or am I being dumb now? I don't really want to ring the babies and go any place near the breeding box.

Thanks.

I don't know too much about this, but if you are worried, banding might be a good idea to tell them apart.

How old are they?

You can band them with split bands once they have left the nest. They will be older then and you won't have to worry about the parents abandoning them.

Split bands are also very easy to put on, compared to closed bands. You can get them at most pet shops, in a variety of colors.

They are still young, so it might be a good idea. Keep us posted

No worries. You'll be able to tell the parents from the babies for a long time yet. What colour are the parents?

Here's a picture off the internet of adult and two fledglings. Pretty easy to tell the difference, right?

You don't have to worry yet. It takes about 4 weeks for zebra chicks to be weaned and another 1-3 weeks to be fully colored. You can split band them once they have fledged.

Good luck with them :)
