Help

Post by Monski » Fri Jun 20, 2008 9:22 pm

This morning I woke up and said hello to my two young finches. They had food, water and a clean cage. later on when I came to check on them, I discovered the male dead on the floor of the cage with a foot missing. I don't have any idea what has happened to poor Bowie. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might have happened? I'm worried that he may have been sick and that his friend might also be sick. :( any help would be appreciated

What do you mean..a foot missing...where is the foot???

What are their symptoms? What species are they?

Very difficult to offer help on that kind of info. Never heard of foots being severed unless it has anything to do with beaches in Canada

Is is possible that he could have got in caught in something and was working to get free? Did you find any part of it around the cage?

How is the female doing? It may not have been a cause of being sick, but an accident.

So sorry for your loss. Illness will not cause the foot to be missing, so you shouldn't have to worry about your other bird. Could a cat get to the cage? Cats will take what they can reach and leave the rest. Is the cage wiring really safe? Birds can get their feet caught and literally kill themselves trying to get free (but then you would find the foot). Please keep us posted if you figure out what happened.

I agree with sally, if the foot got stuck in something you would have found it, so the only viable explanation I can think off is predators. Cats or rats perhaps. Keep us posted please.
