Strawberry foot problem

I noticed one of my strawberry finches a little puffy and not just quite right the past few days. I caught her up this morning and put her into a small cage with some extra heat and food.
I decided to cut her nails which were getting quite long while I had her. Upon doing this when I got to the second foot I noticed what appeared to be a growth on her claw. I didn't want to cut it. It could have been there ever since I got her and I just never noticed it. Anyway I have attached a picture which is not very good but maybe you can see what I am talking about. Anybody have any idea what it coudl be? I will try to take a better picture later. I just didn't want to stress her anymore since she already was from the move.
Her dropping look pretty normal, but her feathers around her rump are a bit messy. I have no idea what her problem is. Just trying watch her closely. I sure don't want to loose her

When I got home today from work she was dead. I hate that so bad. It just came on all of a sudden. I looked at her really closely it appears she had a problem with her other foot as well. It was swollen. I have no idea what happened or what was the matter. My little strawberry cock isn't singing very much this afternoon. I guess he misses her.

Sorry to hear that Donna. Might sound a little morbid, but did you take any pictures of her foot after her death? Even though there isn't much you can do about it now, but someone might recognize her ailment and figure out what she died from. That way you'll know if you happen to see it again.

No, but I actually did think about doing that. But as you said it just seemed a little morbid.

Oh, Donna, I am so sorry you lost one of your little Strawberries! You must be devastated. On another forum, someone posted that ants had gotten into one of her nests, bitten a couple of babies on the legs and feet, and the next day, she lost both of them. Do you think the swelling could have been ant bites?

No, I don't think so. I haven't seen any ants for weeks now in the aviary.

But I guess anything is possible. Thanks Sally, and yes.... I was devastated. I just hope my male starts singing agian soon. I sure do miss that.

Donna,
One of my gouldian hens had a weird growth on her foot too. I watched it for a few days and then one day when I came home, there was blood on the perches. She is fine now, but is missed that toe.
I wonder if it had nothing to do with your finch's toe since my gouldian looked fine with normal droppings and was tightly feathered.
I can't remember when you got your strawberries, but sometimes they don't survive the change in environment very well.

I got them this summer from a pet store near the Atlanta area. They had been there for quite a while. I had them about three months.

I have no idea of their age , but they had been doing so well. Or so I thought.......

I noticed a few days ago that she was looking rather "fluffy" and was down on the floor alot. But when I went close to her she would fly away.

On Sunday I caught her up and put her in a cage with some extra heat.
I put some NV powder in her water. Monday morning when I left for school she looked terrible..... and when I got home she was dead.

I am not even sure that the foot problem was the problem, but I have no idea what else it would be. The cock is doing fine, tight feathers and looking very lonely right now. I did not hear him singing at all last night and really missed that. I think it is going to be very hard for me to find him another mate.

One foot had a little growth on it which kindof looked like a toenail growing sideways. But it was the other foot that had some feathers missing and was swollen. I just happened to notice it when I removed her from the cage.
