Long bird cages

Post by Red_Rose » Tue Sep 15, 2015 11:31 am

Are there any bird cages out there that are longer than 30 inches? I'd love to get a cage for my finches that is more closer to 3 feet in length but it seems most cages are taller rather then longer and I've found that birds are a lot like fish in the sense that they prefer to fly(or for a fish, swim) horizontally rather then vertically.

Has anyone seen bird cages that have more length instead of height?

Thanks. :)

A lot of people combine cages to make them longer. Remove the end of the cage and attach it to another.

The F030 and I believe the F050 are longer, but they are really large flights.

Debbie's idea, is an excellent one. I have attached breeding cages together, to make them into flights. It's not that hard to do really.

I just acquired a Prevue Hampton (F070) and like it a lot. It's 37.5" long

Over here in the UK, I buy a triple breeding cage and take the dividers out. This provides one cage of 48 inches in length. I have several of these and keep 1 or 2 pairs of finches in each. They seem to enjoy flying the full distance of them

Like rcharrod, I have the Prevue Hampton which is ~36"x18"x18":
http://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Products-F ... B00EQ28WX0

It's nicely built and attractive, but the larger doors can be a risk of escape and many finch size products like nests and vacation feeders don't fit without tweaks (the vacation feeders can go inside though). The design of the pans has both good and bad points. I like that there are 2 smaller pans, but the flat edges collect waste.

I also have many of the 36"x18"x18" stackable breeders from here:
http://www.llcages.com/breeders.html

I really like them, but they aren't nearly as attractive as the Prevue Hampton, nor as well built. They are affordable, fold flat and have many finch sized doors that are well placed.

You can also look into the larger flights like these:

http://dblrsupply.pinnaclecart.com/bird ... bird-cage/
http://www.llcages.com/flightcages.html

There is also this one which is 2 cages that are 40" long:

Oh - and hello! I'm new here, but have quite a few Zebras that like having room to fly.

I have the longer 5ft x 36 high flight it give ample room. I bought it locally here in Florida since shipping from llcages from California to Florida would have cost about $100 just to ship.

I have also used 30 by 36 high, connecting two together to create the flight size of the one piece unit.

Thanks Elana!

You might have to wait for a while on the pics. I am terrible at taking pics - I don't even have many pics of the dogs and they are much easier to photograph than the birds :D Someday though, I will make a photo cage and play.

Oh! So many beautiful looking cages! Thanks to everyone for all of your suggestions. :D

I really like the looks of the breeder cages but my concern would be the height. My babies are currently in a 22" high cage. The one breeder cage I was looking at is 12" longer than what I have now but the height is 15". Would that height difference affect them in any way? I remember reading that sometimes they need to adjust from being in a larger cage to a smaller one.

Thanks again, everyone!

when looking at cages I am more concerned with length over height... most finches stay to the top of higher cages seldom using the lower portion except to feed. I think they will be fine.

I had a 60" tall x 36" wide finch cage that someone let me have for CHEAP. I thought it was such a waste of space because the finches stayed at the top. So I decided to turn it side ways and put it on an old coffee table I had. You had to open the doors by sliding them sideways instead of upwards like the cage was meant to be standing upright. I got some cute clips (like you see on plants that hold the vines up on a stake) that looked like tiny dragonflies or butterflies to clip the doors shut, just for extra protection. After I decorated it with natural looking vines and plants, it turned out beautiful!!!

This is just another idea in case you run across a cheap finch cage like I did. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!
