eggbound society!

My little hen is egg bound. I have had here for over a year and she has never laid eggs, but is always tightly bonded to her mate. Today is puffed up and her bottom is swollen. I put her in the hospital cage with heat, humidity, gave her extra calcium via a eye dropper and supplements in her water. Is there anything else I can do?

I believe (from the title/subject) she is a Society Finch.

Since you're not interested in breeding and this ruins the egg, you can put a drop of mineral oil in her vent.
It is controversial.

do they ever get it out? do they ever recover? it's looks painful, and I have two children, this looks worse.

Sometimes the hen passes the egg without too much trouble, sometimes they can die from it. How is she doing now?

perched but puffy. Her little bottom looks so swollen! I soaked it in a warm butt bath and some lube, but it doesn't look good.

she made it through the night but still has not passed anything.

not sure what's happening. Her bottom was crusted in poop this morning. Gave her another bottom soak and cleaned her up. I wonder if the egg broke inside her. It seems like she is lasting a long time. Either she is one strong finch or I am prolonging this. I don't know.

Is/was the hen eggbound for sure? It's only happened twice and each time I've experienced it, I took the hen out and gentle felt just in front of her vent with two fingers. You can definitely feel the egg if you're not sure by her appearance. Maybe she was just constipated!

My poor girl past. I am glad she is not suffering any longer. It appeared that the egg broke inside, and then she got sicker from there. Poor thing.

I'm very sorry to hear that Canucky2. It's so difficult to lose one.

I also lost a hen back in January 08 to being egg bound. My hen passed the egg but died a few hours later from exhaustion. She died in my hands.

Oh my, I cannot imagine witnessing that. I haven't had that happen and I hope and pray I never do. I think it would hurt me as much as them.

thanks, it was hard to watch. We tried to help her and she was so strong. I can't help feel proud of her for the fight she put up. (funny to be 'proud' of a bird)
