Very sad at seeing canaries

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Very sad at seeing canaries

Post by Zebrafincher » Fri Dec 11, 2015 9:56 am

Dropped in to local petstore. Very good usually but was extremely upset to see canaries had ganged up on one baby and it had had half its head pecked off and was missing an eye. I reported it and tye store immediately removed the bird. I know birds do this but it stl upsets me.

Good for you for sticking up for the little one and getting him out of the cage.

If I were the store manager, I would send their bird person off to find another job.

These things can happen, but the people working there should have seen this before it got so bad. All it takes, is a couple of minutes of observation on their part.

Poor baby.

Sigh....that's how I got my Zebras. There is also a society being plucked bald at my local Petsmart but I don't keep societies and I don't want to buy two only to get the one that's doing the plucking. And you can't just get one society, can you? The struggle is real.... and good for you for not bringing it home on impulse.
A pair of Gouldians, Red Cheeked CB's, Orange Cheeked Waxbills, Javas, and Cutthroats. And, two canaries. And, 3 kids, a dog and a patient, patient husband.

I checked back today...and was very happy to see all canaries have been moved. None of the birds are over crowded and all looks very clean. I was very surprised that it had happened.

I don't know exactly what happened to the baby but if I adopted every bird I wouldn't be able to get out of my house (1 have 3 birds at the moment). I often get "escorted" in pet stores because of this tendency!)

I have one Star Finch I adopted because he was being bullied and was bald. He's such a sweetie!

Thanks all for listening. I feel better I said something to the shop and they have listened.

Glad to hear that things have improved for the birds in your Pet Shop. Sometimes just a few words can make a big difference, and obviously they were the right words :-).

It's good you spoke out and helped that poor bird. From what you tell us it seems you helped all the birds get better conditions. Bravo! =D>
