I was told that chick starter food was bad for finches by a person at ace hardware and then a finch breeder told me it was alright.

I have used game bird starter in my eggfood--some of the birds will eat it, some not. It is very high in protein. You have to make sure you get UNmedicated starter--I think most of them are medicated. If the store can't tell you whether or not it is unmedicated, then don't get it. I've found one feed store that sells both, and they also sell it by the pound, so I don't have to get a whole 50# bag of the stuff. I also put it thru a coffee grinder to make more of a powder, then mix it with the mashed eggs.

Another thing I've found that works pretty well with eggfood is pelleted feed. I had Lafeber and Roudybush pelleted feed in my freezer, so I grind it up in my coffee grinder and add it to the eggfood--most of the birds like it.

Sally Thanks for the reply the site never said any thing about medicated starter but will look at the feed store next week. The site was the one that had the blind gouldian Lazlo I had seen this article a long time ago i think someone on here posted it but it still is a good story this is for the eggfood http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8aart/id21.html
This is the link for lazlo http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8aart/id13.html There might be some who haven't seen it .

I keep button quail in the bottom of my larger cages and feed them the non-medicated gamebird starter. I've noticed several of my birds (especially the juvenile gouldians for some reason) like to go down and snack on the stuff.
