My flock of Gouldian juveniles taking a bath

Post by hanabi » Fri Jan 29, 2016 12:44 am

One in, all in :)

Here are my Gouldian juveniles taking their daily bath.

Bath time!

Thank goodness for covered baths; the cage floor would be drenched without the cover.

That reminds me, are there any good designs for DIY covered bird baths like this?

Cheers.

That's adorable Ross.

I just love that bathtub, and have never seen anything like it around here.

I just use large Tupperware containers for my guys, but they are open (and you are right about the flight floors getting soaked, right along with the kitchen floors around them #-o)

Regarding home made tubs.
There was a thread on here a couple of years ago, but I can't remember what it was called. The idea however, had to do with largish plastic jars, with a screw on cover on top. People would buy these at the dollar store, and cut an opening about half way up the side, line it with ductape (to minimize any sharp edges) and use that as a tubby for the kids.

From what I recollect, it worked really well for some folks.

That is the BEST 'bathing' video I've ever seen. =D>

Very nice video. How did you create that water bottle?
I love Gouldian Finches.

Sam007

How did you create that water bottle?

I used two soft drink bottles. Cut one in (about) half and mount it on a wood base with hot melt glue. The other (full uncut) bottle is inserted upside down into it, such that the mouth sits around 1cm above the base of the cut bottle. Fill the uncut bottle with some water to see where the water level reaches on the cut bottle; mark that level with a pen. Then carefully cut windows slightly above the marked water level to allow your birds to drink. Make sure the windows are large enough for the birds to get all there head inside plus a bit extra.

I found the smallest size razor knife provides the easiest cutting of the bottle.

This is not a "once a month" water feeder solution. The water will still get dirty just like any other water feeder due to the birds dropping food into it, so you'll still need to change the water whenever that happens. I think this system is better for situations where you have "more than a few" finches in the same cage that empty the smaller feeders too quickly.

Cheers.

Here is a link to the topic about making a bath out of a plastic jar.

Thank you Sally, that's the thread I saw previously.

Now to find somewhere that sells square-sided glass bottles cheaply. Will look in some of the 100-yen shops here.

Cheers.
