Both Gouldians are broody

Post by Paul's Amazing Birds » Tue Jun 28, 2016 1:13 pm

I have a pair of young blue Goulds that both incubate their 4 eggs at the same time.

They are isolated from all the others in a large quarantine flight and there's a nest cam in place.

The male seems to like to move strands of nest material around but they both share the 24/7 incubation duties - only leaving the nest occasionally to eat. Is this a normal behavior?
Favorite hobby is continuing to improve on a landscaped, weather protected, 500 sq ft mixed aviary with 23 fascinating species. 30 years in the making; currently have
19 different Finch species, 2 types of Doves, plus 23 Button Quail and 30 pair of clear Red Factor Canaries.

Yes I've noticed the same. They take turns incubating but the males always add or move the material. Some of them add so much you can barely see in the best box. Good luck with your clutch!!

Yes mate, this is actually quite normal with Gouldians,

Quite a few other finches do it aswell, societies, zebras, and silverbills all have been known to do this

"broody" is definitely the style for this pair sitting on 6 eggs. I saw a hatchling yesterday, but they BOTH sit so tight one can't really see what's going on <3

Yes, I have one partcular male Gouldian that rearranges the nest material. Unfortuantely, sometimes he buries the eggs. I keep hoping that this is just a mmistake on his behalf but he is always so keen to breed that I think he does it on purpose !!
