Possible male society finch??

Post by Nerine » Sat Aug 20, 2016 9:58 am

Three months ago, I acquired 4 society finches and was told they were all female. I kept them in the same cage until a couple of weeks ago, when I split them into two cages. Shortly afterwards, I heard a bird singing, and realized it was coming from one cage of the societies. Is it definitely a male singing, or can a female society sing as well?

Looks like they may not all be females....

Hi there,

Well to be onest it is actually possible to get a singing hen society finch, although it's quite rare it has been known and the song is somewhat a little softer,

Apart from this rarity I'd say that you've now got a cock bird aswell as yer hens

I thought females didn't sing either. But occasionally the one I think is female lets out a belt of song.

I was recently at a vet with them and he said that my pair seem to be male and female society finches. Colouring, he said, is slightly different, and the rear. OK, laugh, I don't see much difference in the a way of the rear.

They definitely have different personalities! The way the "male" built the nest was different than the "female". He seemed to need to really want to impress her when taking something into the nest. Maybe just different personalities, period.

No eggs, but I haven't had them long. I'm new to birds, period. Bottom line, I delight in whoever is singing, chirping, or zipping around, or splashing the bath water an astonishing distance out of the cage, or getting all excited about a new piece of kale. Like people, I really don't care about their gender, just good company.
