Minimum breeding cage size

Post by karthik_s9 » Wed Sep 24, 2008 9:46 pm

What is the minimum breeding cage size is required for breeding zebra, star, Gouldian and shafttail type finches.

Last weekend I have met few local zebra finch breeders and they are using breeding cages of size 18" long x 12" high x 12" deep, is this fine.

They will breed in that size...but my minimum is 36x18x18 inches.
I feel these are birds we keep not hamsters, and like to give them room to fly....my choice.

the size cagethat Paul (poohbear) mentions is the smallest that I would consider using as well. the more exercise that the adults can get by flying around in their cage/aviary the better their health will be.
bigger is better
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

Thanks poohbear and mickp.

Okay I too agree with you people and it is really very surprising to me, how come all the local breeders whom I have visited are using the same size breeding cages and on top of which used cage size is too small.

Because they are bird breeders....not bird lovers.
As with dogs ...some breed for money...others because they have respect and affection for their pets.
I class myself as both.In fact my 36inch cages I have just cut holes in the ends and joined two up to give my birds 6 feet of flight.
I hate to see birds in cramped cages...no matter how healthy they appear.
