Do Young Green Singers have a Grey Necklace?

Post by Chubbychickenbones » Wed Jan 18, 2017 3:06 pm

This too seems to be a topic with different answers. Female green singers have a grey breasted necklace. But do all juveniles have one too? I can not be certain how old my GS is (bought from Petsmart) but she is not as bright as some and she has a grey necklace and she only chirps so far.
Past:
Zebra's, Society, Saint Helena and two hummingbird sized ones that I do not know or remember names of.
Present:
Two Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu's. One male and female paired.
One Green singer

Yes, young males have it too, making it hard to tell them apart from hens.

All juvie GS's have the grey necklace; adult plumage is obtained by around 9 months old. My GS siblings which I bought last May, were about 2-3 months at the time. A few weeks later I noticed the one trying to sing quite a bit; the other one just chirped, so I suspected that I had a brother and sister, which has turned out to be true :)

If your GS still has the necklace 6 months from now, and still only chirps, you most likely have a female.
