New Blue-capped Cordon Bleu chicks

Post by a_gouldian » Mon Mar 20, 2017 1:47 pm

We are excited to have 5-6 new Blue-capped Cordon Bleu chicks that are now 7 days old. They are huddled together so it is very hard to tell if it's 5 or 6. There were 6 eggs.

Woo hoo \:D/
When did this all happen???

Looks like parents are feeding, and all is well in that nest.
Wonderful news, and congratulations!

Today they are 7 days old, 3-20-17. They are being fostered by our pair of Societies. Our Cordon Bleu pair like to mate and lay fertile eggs, but the chicks get tossed. Next year we may give them another chance, but for now if we have Societies available we will let them sit on the eggs and raise the chicks. (We got tired of seeing the dead chicks on the cage floor). This is the second clutch of Cordon Bleus these Societies have raised. The first clutch of 3 are 3 months old, weaned, and in a large flight cage of their own.

Congratulations, maybe in the future with these babies that you have fostered and raised they will be more willing to breed and raise their own young with out tossing the chicks and being so picky about live foods. keep us updated

Congratulations! Bring on the pictures as they grow up! Would love to see the size difference of the society parents feeding them. The cordon bleus in a local pet store here were soooo tiny compared to societies and gouldians.

The hard part will be finding new unrelated Cordon Bleus but we will be on the lookout.

That is a problem with many species in many areas, sigh...
You have a breeder, who breeds his 2 birds and sells the young. You buy them, but this person happens to be the only breeder of that species in your are, so where on earth do you find unrelated mates?

That's why it's a good idea, to always try and get at least 2 unrelated pairs from the get go, but sadly, that's not always possible #-o

Can you order them in from one of the bird farms?

That is likely what we would have to do. This is how we bought the pair we have now, but we will have to find another place because two of the other pairs of birds (different species) did not work out well and this place has received a lot of bad reviews from people on this forum. We were lucky with our Cordon Bleu pair.

They are now 10 days old and eyes are open. Because they are bigger now they are nesting symmetrically. They either seem to be in two rows, or as in this pic, in a circle with their tails towards the center, like a pinwheel.
