Pied Starfinch cock
In the beginning of the year, I bought 2 young pied starfinches, thinking that they would be a pair. When they finished colouring up, I found that they were both hens. The one paired up with a pied cock that I had before, but the other hen was without a mate.
On saturday, I saw a nice starfinch cock that I could not resist.

Thx Elana. The pictures are not great, as I used my cellphone. I have 2 pairs of Star pieds. The other pair is incubating eggs or maybe has chicks. The only thing that I know for sure is that if I go look, they will abandon the nest.

Then don't look Marius
You'll see soon enough, when they pop out of the nest
Good luck.

MariusStegmann Congrats, he is a very good-looking boy! When I had Stars, they were fairly shy about nest checks, so I just had to be patient and see what came out of the nest.

Re: Pied Starfinch cock
Thx, I will curb my curiosity. Last year I had 3 clutches of starfinches that fledged during June, August and September. Only 2 chicks survived out of the 10 that fledged. The cold was too much for them.

Very nice bird Marius,
Just wanted ask is the pied mutation dominant or recessive in stars?
I also have a pied cock paired to a normal hen , so was just wondering...
thanks

Re: Pied Starfinch cock
NRJ The experts say it is a dominant mutation. Last year I had a pied cock paired up with a normal hen. I had a very nice pied chick in almost every clutch. Unfortunately they didn't survive. The two that did survive had a couple of white feathers in the wings.
