Sometimes I use a product called Avi-cleans, but other times I'm just too lazy and give them plain water, just being sure to let the water run for a bit, before filling the bath dish.
I only leave the bath water in the cage for about an hour so it doesn't get pooped in usually.

I use just tap water but my gf is at home so she just swaps out the bath water after it gets used or twice a day to keep the poo mess down.

Add oil and lettuce and you got a salad!Sally wrote:Most of the time, I add apple cider vinegar (from health food store) to their bath water, 1 Tbs. to 1 gallon.
But seriously, dont the finches smell like vinegar ?

Hah, I never get close enough to them to smell their feathers! And since they all bathe in vinegar water, I guess they are used to the smell themselves--at least I haven't heard any complaints.Finch Fry wrote:But seriously, dont the finches smell like vinegar ?

so you are adding vinegar to promote good feather condition rather than parasite control? I'll bet it is good for both though. Thanks.Hah, I never get close enough to them to smell their feathers! And since they all bathe in vinegar water, I guess they are used to the smell themselves--at least I haven't heard any complaints.I will admit that when I am filling all the little tubs, I can smell the vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is supposed to have all these good qualities, and someone mentioned one time that it is good for feather condition, so I just do it.

HAHAHAH, you know your finches are probably conspiring against you for the stench of the vinegar. They probably formed a little gang called "The Really Good Looking Acetic Acid Crew." They probably sit and ponder ways to get back at you by launching their poo through the cage bars or picking at seeds and throwing the husks on the floor... oh wait, they already do that.Sally wrote:Hah, I never get close enough to them to smell their feathers! (btw, acetic acid is the stuff that makes vinegar smell like vinegar and have that strong taste)

williep, my poor birds don't have any way to avoid the vinegar. Not only do I put it in their bath water, I also add it to their drinking water. I've been doing this for quite a while, and now I can't even remember where I read about it, and the benefits it is supposed to have. I'll have to try to find that info.

Vinegar is antiseptic (it kills germs on contact) and antibiotic , Apple cider vinegar contains over thirty important nutrients, a dozen minerals, over half a dozen vitamins and essential acids and several enzymes. Yes! Apple cider vinegar has many outstanding qualities that are beneficial to you and your birds!
