Storing bird seed

Post by maresan » Tue Aug 11, 2009 5:43 pm

I have 10 finches and want to know if bird seed would last if I bought a 50lb bag? Is there a time frame for how long bird seed will last?
Also, would it be okay to freeze it and use alittle at a time?
Thanks for any help.

With 10 birds, it would be best if you freeze and use a little at a time. Great idea if you have the freezer room! =D>

If you don't freeze it, you are liable to get seed moths. If you have the freezer space, put up as many gallon bags as it takes, and then just use one bag at a time. I've found that many seed mixtures, nestling foods, etc, keep better in the freezer.
