bedding choice of the day

Post by cindy » Fri Sep 11, 2009 1:18 pm

Ok, I have the big flight, took the grate out but have the choice of 3 bedding material today. It is for the little Gold Breast.

Kaytee Cozy Comfort, it a small fiber material. I am concerned they may eat it...do you think I am over worrying it? I used it under grates but not without a grate before, will it stick to their nails?

Carefresh chunks are big

Aspen shavings, more like leaves, small chips. I use it under the grates of the other cages. I like the light color.

opinions please...

I use aspen shavings in my aviary and I like it. (The button quail like it too.)

In the parrotlet cages I use sawdust pellets (like kitty litter). They absorb better than the shavings but would be too expensive to use in the entire aviary. I also don't know if the quail would like it quite as much, and it might be too dusty when stepping on them.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I use sand and it works well. But I don't have Button quail. Sawdust sounds like a good option :D

I have a goldbreast and he spends a lot of the time on the bottom of the cage "foraging" so I use kraft type paper on the tray, then spread a bit of Meadowgrass over that. He loves to poke around in the hay, and the paper keeps the tray clean and makes it easy to clean out the hay when it's too dirty or too damp.

The meadowgrass is available at Petsmart in small bales (meant for rabbits). :)

I have Timothy Hay for nesting along with cocofiber. I put some of the nesting material down on the floor of the cage on top of the bedding. The shaftail are picking pieces up and playing with it, they like moving it around looking for seeds also
