healthy finch seed mix

Post by star » Sat Sep 26, 2009 10:35 am

Does anyone know of a site that sells a really good finch seed mix? One you order for your own birds and are very happy with? All the mixes at the pet stores either lack stuff or they have all these colored pieces that the birds do not ever eat. Some of the mixes add sugar ,fructose, honey, molasses, or some other type of sweetener birds should not be eating. Some even add salt. What is wrong with these people? So what I am looking for would have no added sugars, salt, or colored pieces. Please share what seed you feed your finches and where you can purchase it.

Avian science is what I mix with my 50# bag of white millet. I buy the 20# canary. My finches don't waste a seed.

This should probably be moved to the Diet and Nutrition section.

I use a seed blend from Fairest Finches. I've been ordering their seed for quite some time now, and my birds love it. It's always very fresh, and sprouts quite easily although my birds don't care too much for sprouted seeds  Anyway, here is there link. They are wonderful to deal with as well.

I get it at Southern Pet Supply Co. In Metairie, LA. Suburbs of New Orleans. I pick up a bag once a month when I drive down to get my supplies for the month. $20.00 50# bag. Last time I ordered 20# of seed from a wholesaler in CA. my shipping bill was almost $25 so I'd hate to see the cost of shipping a 50# bag.
I wish I could get other seed in 50# bags at a good price but the white proso millet is the only one they carry.

I am moving this to Diet and Nutrition - I think it's more applicable for this thread than Health.

Shipping is what is killing all of us that used to order 50lb. bags! Try www.hermanbros-seed.com, but ask about shipping first--they are in Michigan. If there is a bird club in your area, check with them--some clubs are combining members' orders in order to get a break on shipping--sometimes a pallet load is cheaper, but you still have those darn shipping charges. Also check with local feed stores, some of them carry bags of various bird seeds--just make sure they understand that you are feeding domesticated finches, not wild birds.
