Star Finch babies update with pics

Post by L in Ontario » Sun Oct 11, 2009 10:27 am

Here's a pic of my two Stars as of 10 minutes ago. Looks like they will both be red faced this time round - see the little red dots starting to come out on their faces. And they each are beginning to get the whiter 'stars' under their chins as well.

Last time I got one yellow faced male. So just the gender remains a mystery... for now; but I'm pretty sure I've seen one of them singing already! =D>

It looks to me like both of them are starting to get red behind the eyes, which would mean they are both male. If they are male, they should be split to yellow.

I agree with the red 100% Sally! I just didn't realize that they could not have red females.

Since they had a yellow boy previously this means they can have yellow or red males. And you're saying that red has to be males? So they can only have yellow female babies? oh. okay!

Oh, no, I didn't mean they could only have red males, just that they were showing some red back in areas where hens usually don't have any red, so I was assuming they are male. And if they are red males, they would be split to yellow. But if they are red hens, I think they would just be normal red hens. If the birds are red, only the males can carry the yellow gene. If the birds are yellow, both sexes can carry the yellow gene. I think. It's so confusing to me.

Okay, I got it now and you're most probably right about them both being males. I know you are right about red males being split to yellow as yellows cannot be split to red no way, no how! My daughter drilled that into me, finally!

Thanks again!

Thank you Liz!!! I thought this picture with the babies was way to cute!!!! Looks like they are singing their little hearts out!!!

So I guess I wont know if my males are split to yellow untill I breed them. I think I may have tracked down the breeder. If it is him, I can find out if they are split to yellow. And maybe he will have some females for me!!!!
