A Very Sad Story About Saffron finches, Gambling/Boston area
I spoke with my father who lives in Boston, we started talking about my finches and how they were doing. He told me this weekend there were 40 Saffron finches taken into the care of an Animal Welfare group after a raid. The finches were rescued from a horrible life and had been used for fighting much like with roosters, a practice outlawed in Brazil.

This is such a shame to exploit these birds like this. This is yet another way for the greedy to stuff their pockets.

Such a sad thing to hear! I will never understand how someone can do things like this to any type of animal. If they want money so bad, then they should try getting a job and working hard. And if they like the fighting, then they should put on some gloves and step into a ring.

It is a shame they exploit the small and helpless, the ones with no voice just to line their pockets with money from the blood and suffering of their victims...birds, dog etc.

This is actually the second recent incidence of this which is just insane..
It's crazy to think of what people will stoop to doing to try to make a few quick bucks.
I would have never thought anyone could resort to "fighting finches" to make money.
It's so disappointing, at least they have a chance at a normal life, now

It is a shame....
Here is a post I made last October about 150 saffrons and canaries that were taken and charges pressed in Conneticut.

It's been around as long as cock fighting but just not noticed as much...
People with that many finches are just considered breeders.....
and aren't paid too much attention.
They don't realize how fiesty they are and that people would actually fight them.

As the article said, due to their small size it is easier to hide this activity than say dog or cock fighting. Thank goodness the inspectors reported what they saw to the right people. My father said it was in the papers and all the news channels in the Boston area this weekend.

I feel like I'm having deja vu. How many saffron finch fighters are there? It's ridiculous. If you feel the need to bet on an animals abilities, bet on a turtle race.

Very sad commentary on our society. I'll never understand the appeal of watching fighting of any kind. BTW, I'm going to move this to Finch Chat.

There was a pair for sale locally, I was considering them because they are a beautiful bird. When my father told me today what happened over the weekend I was very upset that these little birds had to go through this. How many were mamed or killed all for the almighty dollar...greed.

I don't even like fighting sports like boxing. But at least in that case both parties are in the fight by their own decision. Exploiting animals like this is just so cruel!
But then... I don't understand the need for war either.

Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I pray there is hope for the surviving finches. After medical care, good food they can find adopting homes to go to where they can live in peace and be enjoyed for their beauty and song.
