Lavender Finches

Post by akidsgal » Fri Feb 26, 2010 7:41 pm

Today I tripped upon a pair of Lavenders. They were really inexpensive, so guess who came home with them! Upon watching them they seem to be very flighty. I see where the Info center really doesn't have much on them. I am sure they won't breed with me as I do NOT feed live food. I do give dried proteins but jsut can't bring the bugs into the home. (It's not my house)

This year there will be changes done to the house for the birds. They are housed right now in the basement, so they are not as hearty as they were in my old home.

These 2 are just plain fun to watch and not really skittish at all. Maybe people have been around them often. I do have them upstairs until the quarantine is up.

Is there anything special that I should know with these guys? I did read that they should not be housed with most of the birds I already have.

WooHooooo Congratulations on the new birds!! =D>

If you don't want to / can't feed live mealworms - you can alway substitute freeze-dried bloodworms. These are readily available at most petstores as fishfood!

Hope you can post pics soon!!

I have a pair. (I think they are a pair) They lay eggs but they are never fertile so I am thinking maybe two hens.

They are very beautiful birds. I think you should be able to breed without mealworms. I know some people who have. Try Liz's advice and get some dried insects or bloodworms. They do LOVE mealworms though.

Congratulations and good luck. They are rather shy birds by very lovely.

I have a pair too. But I think that I have 2 males, they never laid eggs or even tried to nest. :(

Funny thing, mine NEVER seem to eat the mealworms...

Upon reading my replies I can say that they will be just fine. However if one has 2 females and one has 2 males........ and u2 live rather close........... I am thinking maybe a trade would be in your favor........
