Type of finch to add to my aviary?

Post by isabird » Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:52 pm

In my aviary I currently have:
-1 pair of scarlett chested parakeets
-1 pair of red-headed parrot finches
-1 pair of society finches
-and 3 pairs of lady gouldian finches although I'm considering keeping 1 more pair from my 09 babies. (so I would have 4 pairs total)[/b]
14 birds total

My outdoor aviary is a little more than 7x4 feet wide and 6 feet tall. According to my measurement I can have 14-19 birds.

So I'm considering adding 1 more pair of a new species to complete my aviary. I would like to get a species that gets along with the other birds I currently have and eats a similiar diet. Even better if the finch breeds at a different time from the lady gouldian (my lady gouldian breed from oct-jan) so I will not have too many fledglings at once.

Here are a couple breeds I'm considering:
-cordon blue or blue capped
-strawberry
-orange cheeked waxbill
-owl finch
-goldbreested waxbill

Any suggestion?

Thanks,
Natalie #-o

Natalie....It's your decision...but why more birds? Nice little aviary and you don't mention any problems so why don't you keep it that way? Much better if they are not cramped.

I agree with poohbear, why risk upsetting the balance of your current aviary.
Better to get another aviary and start all over again =D> =D>
Then you could get all of the birds in your list

Yes, that is very true. I have a 4x2 foot flight that is also empty most of the year. I use it for coloring out gouldians before sale so I was thinking I could add that pair to it...
Maybe, I will just keep what I have and call it quits on adding another species :D

I say orange cheeked waxbills! They are very cute and high energy and keep to each other for the most part and are small! :D
1 pair of GB waxbills
1 pair of Societies
1 pair of Zebras (CFW&Normal) + 8 eggs

Your aviary is gorgeous! I would love to have an outdoors aviary like that but I live in NY. I guess I could have a summer aviary!

Thanks for the advise on Orange Cheeked. I think I may try to hold off till I have more time/space.

Thanks for the compliment on my aviary I am very proud of it as I built it myself last summer. My birds have done well in it. I did place plexi glass over many of the walls to protect from wind and rain during the winter months. Ous winters are still a lot warmer that NY A summer avairy could be nice for you=D>

I know a man in Maryland who keeps his birds in the basement during the winter, but then they go outside all summer in several outdoor aviaries--like a summer vacation! Plus he gets to enjoy them outside as well.
