I used the method in the FIC
http://www.finchinfo.com/diet/introducing_new_foods.php
- I remove the seeds just before lights out.
- Then in the morning, soon after the lights turn on, I put in the food I want them to learn to eat; egg mix or pellets.
- I leave that out for a couple hours, then I put the seeds back.
If they don't eat the new food for several days, then I increase the time an hour (to 3hrs) for several days
If they still don't eat, then I crease another hour (to 4hrs) for several days.
The tricky thing is they will soon learn that if they "hold out" the seeds will come back to them. So you have to get past that hump, where they are hungry enough that they will try the new food. Mine always ate the new food before or by 4 hours. If you get one eating the other will soon follow.
If you have other passive birds, put them w the gouldians and they will teach the gouldians to eat other food. This is what I did with some of my goulidans. I have a hen that did not eat anything but seeds. Putting her with other birds that ate egg/veggi mix got her to start eating egg and veggi. Monkey see...monkey do.
For my birds, I give them a mix of veggies, egg mix and sometimes a pinch of seeds. The seeds helps to get them to the dish, especially in the beginning. Once they regularly eat the veggi/egg mix I stop adding the seeds, except as a treat.
My egg mix is
- hardboiled eggs (3 yokes + 2 whites)
- commercial dried egg food (Orlux) (1 rounded teaspoon)
- miracle meal (1/2 rounded teaspoon)
- organic corn meal (1 level teaspoon)
Then I grind/mix it in a mini food processor. The food processor does a better job than a fork.
The corn meal and egg food are added to dry out the egg, so it isn't pasty. I also put a piece of paper towel in the bottom of the container to absorb additional moisture.
I use both LaFebers and Zupreem. The birds seem to prefer Zupreem. I think because the pellet is about the size of a millet seed. I use the Zupreem natural (brown colored). I used to use the fruit flavored, but their poop would be colored, and that color would stain the perches.
