Orange-cheeked Waxbill escape artists

Post by jabo322 » Sun Jan 13, 2008 10:17 am

Hi, my name is Wanda, and this is my first time posting here. Last week I bought a pair of Orange-cheeked Waxbills, and they went into a flight cage with a pair of male Zebra finches. On Friday, I woke up to find one of the OC's gone. I found a few feathers but did not find the bird and, heartbroken, assumed the cat got it. Well, my daughter located it later (in the cat's mouth) and was able to rescue it. It was unharmed, fortunately. I thought the bird had gotten out through the largish openings above and below the doors, and covered them to prevent further mishap. But this morning my husband found that the other one had gotten out. This one was not as fortunate  . The only thing I can figure is that these tiny birds can get through the bars. I didn't think this was possible, but what other answer is there? Has anyone else had this experience with these birds?

I plan to return the remaining bird to the store. I can't bear to think that it will get out again.

Hi, Wanda - So sorry about your OC. I have this same cage, but I have Gouldians in it. Others who have this same cage and have small waxbills have posted about them getting out. I don't know if this cage will work for the tiniest of birds, like the OC or Goldbreasts. I also have this same type cage in the double flight, but I don't have the littlest waxbills in it. I may try some small waxbills in it. It is in my other bedroom, though, and I have to keep the door closed even with larger finches in there, because my cats are not to be trusted, at all. My cats have caught birds thru the bars, which is why they are banned from any room that has cages.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

That's so sad! Sorry for your loss. I've read about other people losing really little birds through the bars of a cage. :(

I'm so sorry! I have strawberries, swees and OCs in those cages, and haven't had any problems with escapes. They are in with very passive birds, though - maybe the zebs were chasing them around? Or maybe they just liked to escape. I have had a goldbreast escape from a 30x18x18 breeder cage, so keep toilet seats down and a cup of water on top of the cage. Luckily the cat is too old to chase him down.....

Yes, it's possible the zebs were chasing them. I did take the surviving OC back to the store, I couldn't bear to have it escape again and be killed. I got a pair of Societys, they are so sweet.

My daughter noticed today that there is a slightly wider spacing between the bars on either end of the front panel and the corner posts. Maybe this is how they got out.

Hilary, what type of birds do you keep with the very little ones, the very passive birds?

I keep strawberries and swees together, and the goldbreasts and fire finches together. OCs actually seem to do okay with several different finches - a have a pair in with my bachelor goulds, a society and her cb boyfriend, and another pair in a cage with nuns, bronze wings and spices.
