Sexing Java Finches

Post by kkpage » Sun May 31, 2015 7:19 am

I need help so any Java finch experts would be appreciated...iv recently bought 2 javas asking for male and female it's been a week and from the start I knew the male as he was singing and dancing, however now iv heard the (female) sing also only today...iv tried looking online and it says only the male sings but the female can call? Is this correct? I'm kinda thinking I have two males now :-/ any help much appreciated, all the signs of it being a female and male are there ones beak is reader then the other the eye ring is redder then the other. Iv also just noticed the only time the (female) sings is when the male is eating????

Please help

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on diet, housing, and general care of finches. If you put your general location in your profile, it makes it easier to answer locale-specific questions later on.

I don't know anything about Java finches, but we do have members who have experience with them, so hopefully someone will be able to help you. I'm going to move your post into its own thread, so it won't be overlooked by others. I'll call it "Sexing Java Finches" and I'll put it in the Species forum. Good luck with sexing these birds!

cindy is pretty handy at sexing them. I have some and am terrible at it. Except with the Fawns. Those are easy.

Welcome to the forum! I have had Javas in the past and only the males sing. Its been a while since I had pairs and babies but you can tell by the way the beaks are shaped aa well.

if you can provide close ups of each birds profile it will helps.. Below is also a sexing guide to use. I raise a large number of javas, often the closer to 9 months to a yr on some will help with sexing. Fawns and silvers can be sexed by cap color.

I read somewhere that you need three pair, not two, to get along together. How big is your cage? Is it just the one male that is not getting along & is he chasing the female? I have a male & female in separate cages side by side because the male chases her. It might have helped if you kept the females in a cage next to the males for a while first so they could get acquainted before being added to the cage with the males.

I would suggest with two pairs that you house each pair separately. What can happen in a two pair set up is both males can set their sights on one hen, the males will bicker and it can get into a physical brawl.

This can happen in a larger flight cage. What size cage are you proposing to house them in?

I do have a large walk in with a good number of my breeding javas housed together while resting. I do not split my javas up by sex since they tend not to drop eggs or breed when boxes are not provided. Once the pairs breed and bond they do in some cases stay together even in a flight.
