Sexing Spice Finches

Post by Brant's_Finches » Tue Jun 22, 2010 11:59 am

Hey everyone! Well i have decided to start working on my mannikin and munia cage. So far I have 1 pair of societies and hope to add a pair of spice finches, bronze wings, chestnuts, tri colored, and white nuns within this year! My first stop today is picking out spice finches. So can anyone give me any visual clues to look for aside from the male singing? Like beak shape, color pattern, etc? I appreciate everyone!

**Yes, my name is much simpler now! I was tired of all the different bird luver stuff!  **

I had to watch for singing, myself, though I believe that beak shape can be used as a visual clue.

Brant,

Those species you mention are all very compatible, as far as living together goes. However, I'd be careful about putting all those mannikins together if you intend to let them breed. There's a good chance they would start hybridizing and then you'll have a real mess, knowing what is what. I think Societies are already hybrids so they would have little problem breeding with some of those species you mention.

I have a similar set up, though I suspect that most of mine are all male (though I do know that my spices are a true pair). I have white nuns, black nuns, spice, and bronze wings together. All get along well, and since all need regular nail clipping it's simple to just catch all of them one by one to get the task done.
