well apart from the goodness in the bread it makes it less sticky, most birds when they start to peck at egg food get most of it stuck to the side of thier beaks, then they automatically wipe thier beaks so they get very little but the bread crumbs give them something to pick up and roll around in their beaks.so it gives them the pecking instinct they need when they come to eat hard seed..of course they will have had soaked seed prior to that so if you mix some supplements with it then it will soak into the bread thus giving them at least a little nourishment......an old thing that bird breeders used was milk sop to get birds pecking they would soak bread in milk ...sprinkle poppy seeds on it and they would turn black when wet and the young birds would peck at this to get them started....but now its not used as much beacuase of the risk of the milk going sour...history lesson over!
