My CFW male and white female produced a CFW male?

Post by Domenic » Wed Jul 07, 2010 1:43 am

I have a CFW male and a pure white female (have no idea what either of them could be split for) and their first two chicks just fledged about a week ago. I read that CFW is a sex linked mutation and that females can not be split for it, therefore all CFW chicks from my pair would be female and all male chicks will be split to CFW. Lo and behold, one of the CFW chicks has started singing his raspy little song.

Here's a pic of the parents:

The chicks look exactly like CFW chicks—all white with black teardrops and grey speckles on the top of their heads. How did I end up with a male CFW?

Congratulations Domenic....it is very pretty. Don't you love surprises? That saying about zebras being like a box of chocolates, you never can tell what you are going to get...so true!

That's strange... Is it possible that you have a cfw female that isn't showing the teardrops and tail markings? Maybe she's pied?

I thought I read somewhere that white fledglings have grey speckling on their heads...

here it is:

Do you mean she is CFW split to White?

no she is CFW white. just like CFW black cheek, or CFW penguin ect......
she is CFW white but u cant see the CFW becoz she is white, and the white mutations covers all the black and orange colors anywhere on the bird's body.
if she is CFW split white u will see her tear mark.

Thanks for explaining that! Is CFW white a recessive gene? Is there a chance any of her chicks will be all white too?

CFW is sex-linked
white is recessive
u will get white babies if the male is split white. u will know that from the babies color. if any of the babies appear to be white then the male is split white for sure.
if no white babies, then there is no chance to get any. becoz daddy isnt split for white.

Thanks :D I had no idea she was a CFW White. The best way to tell zebra genes--breed them. :)
